The bookmarklets still work from the Edit Bookmarks window. If you've been affected by this bug, trying keeping the same bookmarklets again; here's how to deal with the Netscape 4.7 bug. You should also fill out a Netscape bug report.

June 12 - After a long absence, I've released some second-generation bookmarklets - some of these are slightly longer than previous bookmarklets. They include "Edit HTML of Page" and "Find and Replace in Source" (both under "Design") for Netscape, and two collections for Internet Explorer: Markup Marklets and the experimental XML Marklets. Markup Marklets allow you to quickly edit the text of whichever webpage you are viewing - this functionality is expected to be built into Netscape 5.

Apr. 13 - A tutorial on bookmarklets has appeared at Inside Dynamic HTML.

Apr. 2 - Added "Translate (AltaVista)" (under "Other Search Bookmarklets") (sent in by Matthias Kaskel). There will be an effort to internationalize bookmarklets. Let me know if you can help translate. Steven Snedker has produced a bookmarklets introduction in English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Danish, encouraging evangelization. Andrei Orehov has written some bookmarklets for Russians which include a Russian-English translator.

Apr. 1 - Added "Statusbar Shows URL" (under "Page Data"). Improved "Edit Copy of Selection" (under "Page Data") to allow multiple edit windows. Fixed "Zoom on First Image" (under "Page Look") to cancel correctly. Improved "Bookmarklet Editor" (under "Design") to allow window resize (thanks to Jerrad Pierce). Improved "Read Comment" (under "Miscellaneous") to allow the result to be copied (thanks to "the webmeister"). Improved "Back" and "Forward" (under "Navigation") to work correctly on frames (thanks to Brian Bloom).

Mar. 31 - Added several special-purpose calculators: "Download Calculator(s)", "Salary Calculator...", "Average...", and "Running Total" bookmarklets (under the newly renamed "Calculate/Convert" section). These are paradigm examples: almost any scientific formula can be turned into a bookmarklet. I've written about web browsers as programmable calculators. Also improved the original "Calculator" to allow the result to be copied, and moved it to that section.

Mar. 30 - Added a handful of bookmarklets that were removed on Jan. 20: "Split Frames into Windows" and "MegaBlink" (both under "Page Look"), "Duplicate Page", "Up a Directory", "Go To Previous Page in Website", "Show robots.txt for this Domain", and "Make Link for Page (Netscape version)" (under "Navigation"), "Make Link to Page and Window (Netscape version)" (under "Windowing"), and "Search in Pages that Link to this one" (under "Other Search Bookmarklets"). Macintosh Netscape users should see the tip linked to below.

Mar. 29 - Added a few bookmarklets which give some of the features of the latest browsers to earlier (and competing) browsers: "What's Related" and "Smart Browsing" (both under "Other Search Bookmarklets") and "AutoFill Anonymous" (under "Miscellaneous").

Mar. 26 - I was interviewed by the Brazilian magazine Aqui!.

Mar. 25 - Microsoft's UI testers say bookmarklets work in Internet Explorer 5. This hasn't stopped people from reporting problems anyway - but I will now resume posting new bookmarklets. Let me know if you experience problems with IE5 and bookmarklets - the more details, the better. (It turns out that this site is an excellent way to test IE5's JavaScript - one of you found a bug in IE5!)

Very cool - you'll be able to make a search bookmarklet for your site. If your site has fewer than 5000 pages, you can use Thunderstone's free search service to index your domain. Then use the free Make Search Bookmarklet tool to make the bookmarklet. (Currently this only makes browser-specific versions, but this will change very soon.) For example, try Search Bookmarklets.com.... Note: this bookmarklet is not sensitive to text selection.

Mar. 22 - A message from Microsoft states that "it certainly is not our intention to bust bookmarklets". I apologize for the tone of yesterday's post (which insinuated that Microsoft had deliberately killed bookmarklets in IE5) - I've erased that post. Still don't have a solution for the reported IE5 problems yet... stay tuned.
This just in: CNET's Builder.com article discusses bookmarklets as a useful way of packaging scripts.

Mar. 21 - There is now a Danish-language bookmarklets tutorial.

Mar. 18 - Microsoft released Internet Explorer 5 today and there have been reports that some of the more useful bookmarklets don't work correctly anymore on it. We'll look into this soon.

Mar. 17 - There is now a Bookmarklets category in Open Directory consisting of bookmarklets created by and for the editors.

Mar. 14 - Note to the concerned and conspiratorial: No, you're thinking of the other Steve Kangas.

Mar. 9 - Improved version of "Page Freshness" for frames (created by David Burry.)

Mar. 3 - The site was mentioned at Camworld. (Weblogs are a great way to surf the web.)

Mar. 1 - The site was mentioned at TBTF.

Feb. 23 - Added "RGB to Hex..." and "Hex to RGB..." (under "Design") (created by Anh Le). Some additions and corrections to the "More Info About..." search tool.

Feb. 20 - Added "Reformat Form" and "Bookmarklets Editor" (both under "Design"). Adjusted all Conversion bookmarklets to allow Netscape 3 to handle inputs which are not numbers.

Feb. 18 - Improved all Conversion bookmarklets; you can now copy the results to paste into other applications. They now also round precision to two decimal places and warn when the input is not a number.

Feb. 13 - Added two types of "Valentine" (under "Miscellaneous") - just in time for St. Valentine's Day! Added "Back2" and "Back3" (sent in by JB Hiller) (under "Navigation"). Added some"developer tools" - "Ugly Variable Generator" and "Bookmarklet to Function" (under "Design"). A special welcome to visitors who have reached the site from Brazil (through Jornal da Tarde), Germany (via Tips und Tricks), and Russia (from freeware.ru).

Feb. 9 - Improved frames versions of "Page Color..." and "Text Color..." to handle arbitrarily nested frames.

Feb. 8 - Added "Show Occurrences of Word..." for IE (under "Navigation") (created by Laurent Denoue). Improvements to both versions of "Go To Selected URL" (under "Navigation") - whitespace and quotes are now removed.

Feb. 1 - There is now a WebReference tutorial on making bookmarklets. The site has also been mentioned in the online notes to Danny Goodman's JavaScript Bible.

Jan. 31 - Something of interest to people who are writing bookmarklets: Ulrik Gade pointed out to me that in a bookmarklet you can reduce the number of global variables to one by encapsulating the script. I've written a little about encapsulation.

Jan. 27 - Added "Speed Reader" (under "Navigation"). The idea for that one was suggested by someone whose name I've lost (write back!). Mail to Bookmarklets.com was down. - but it's fixed now. People have sent some very nice messages - quite a few of them! There should be space for them now. Thank you all!

Jan. 26 - Fixed "ASCII to Character..." (under "Design") to warn when there are inputs which are out of range. Fixed "Simple Table Code..." (under "Design") - it was missing a newline. I had a major mail crash - lost all mail that was written before the 27th. If we were having an ongoing conversation, please write back!

Jan. 22 - The site was mentioned at Lockergnome.

Jan. 21 - The site was mentioned at the Librarian's Site du Jour.

Jan. 20 - Temporarily removed a handful of useful bookmarklets that were causing problems for Netscape 4.08, 4.5, and 4.5.1 for Macintosh under the assumption that they would also cause problems for later browsers. Hope to have these back online soon. The online bookmarks manager at murl.com is an example of how backend services can be mated with bookmarklets to provide a richer user experience.

Jan. 19 - Fixed a problem where Mac & Unix IE4 users were being fed the Windows version of the Search Tools. The Lyrics Server (under "Other Search Tools") was temporarily disabled by Swiss police (apparently acting on behalf of the Harry Fox Agency). I'm leaving the bookmarklet up - the Lyrics Server is a Good Thing.

Jan. 18 - Past the first 1500 visitors! The site was mentioned at memepool.com and the Robot Wisdom Weblog.

Jan. 17 - Fixed "Character to ASCII" (under "Design") so cancellation won't produce an error. Updated domain names for Google and AltaVista (under "Other Search Tools").

Jan. 16 - Fixed "IP Address" (under "Miscellaneous") in order to alert users who don't have Java enabled. Added "Remove Background Image" (under "Page Look") (created by Steve Chai.) Incorporated his idea into an improved version of "Page Color..." (under "Page Look") for IE4.

Jan. 15 - Fixed typo within "ISO Latin Characters" (under "Design"). The site was mentioned at www.scripting.com (thanks Dave!)

Jan. 14 - The site was posted in comp.lang.javascript. Added "Personal Note" (under "Miscellaneous") (created by Andrew Wooldridge.)

Jan. 12 - Started mentioning the site to the experts. (Some encouraging words from Danny Goodman, Jamie Jaworski, and Tomer Shiran!)
